Qaqortoq, Greenland

The original itinerary was to travel slowly from Nanortalik to Qaqortoq overnight. On advice from the pilots, due to the high ice concentration, the plan was revised to travel quickly during the remaining day light hours. Mark and I  found a window table in Horizon Court to sit in the warm and watch our progress.

The next morning we woke to a sunny 6° day. Once again it was a water shuttle to get to shore so, despite the sunshine, we dressed in our many layers.

Like Nanortalik, Qaqortoq was a colourful collection of houses – just a bit bigger and hillier! There were 3 geocaches to find in Qaqortoq, and of course, they were on the top of 3 different hills.

Hill number 1!

Streets did zigzag up the hills, but we found a lot of stair cases had been built for pedestrian traffic. Not sure that I would want to use them when they are icy though! We hadn’t gone very far uphill before we started shedding at least one clothing layer.

The way the town was designed, we had to go back down the hill before we could proceed up the next hill.

I have no idea why but every where, no matter how high up the hill, there were boats resting on pallets.

All geocaches successfully found and the ‘high’ lights of Qaqortoq covered, we headed through the ‘town cente’ and joined the water shuttle line to return to the ship.

Greenland you have been a unique experience, but it is time to head south in search of some warmer weather!
