Nanortalik,  Greenland

Today’s port was Nanortalik, Greenland. Nanortalik means ‘place with the polar bears’ in Greenlandic. We arrived and anchored just before 7am – it was a chilly 5° outside.

We had a ‘Tour Amongst the Icebergs’ booked for the afternoon. We didn’t want to leave the ship too early, so waited for a later water shuttle. This gave us enough time to walk  around tiny Nanortalik before our tour. The population of our ship is 3 times that of Nanortalik!

Every house has a water view and there are no lawns to mow!

The highlight of our walk around the town was seeing and hearing one of the smaller icebergs in the water close by cracking with a loud bang and splash!

By the time it was time for our iceberg trip the clouds had started to clear and the sun was shining.

Although we didn’t get to see one of the polar bears that the town is named after, it was a truly awesome experience to get even closer to these icebergs with  their different shapes, sizes, textures and colours.

Before we caught the water shuttle back to the ship we popped into the bar to sample some Fisk. It is a licorice vodka that tastes like Fisherman’s Friend.
