Today’s port was Salerno, Italy. Salerno is used as the port to access places such as Pompeii, Naples, Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. We have had the good fortune to have already visited these places but have not actually been to Salerno itself.
Our first goal was to reach the medieval castle that overlooked the city – Castello Arechi!

Once off the ship we crossed the piazza and a road and we were in the old city. This brought back fond memories of our participation in 2012 in the ‘Week in the Sun’ orienteering carnival where we spent 5 days doing sprint competitions through old Italian villages. This time we had no map but just knew that we had to keep climbing up and to the right.

Having successfully found our way to the top of the city to the long road that then wound up the hill to the castle we were happy to find a walking track that led up to the castle.

My watch told me we had done just over 6000 steps – all up hill. We have also experienced what it really means to be ‘dripping with sweat!’

Castle conquered! It was time to explore the rest of the city. We retraced our steps down the walking track – not as sweat inducing but harder on the knees!

For our return leg we came back along the seaside and the Lungomare.

Back on board it was time to cool off in the pool and rehydrate.
