Messina, Sicily

Today we visited the 1st of the 8 ports we will visit in Europe – Messina, Sicily. Messina would be the point of contact if indeed long legged Italy could kick poor Sicily!

We arrived in port at 3pm. Disembarking the ship it was a walk across the road and straight into the centre of town. There were HOHO buses and even a choo-choo as options to get arround. We spent a very pleasant afternoon walking and exploring. At 35° it was a bit cooler than our last few ports.

We decided churches in Messina were like pubs in Hobart – one on every corner! They were all quite impressive in their individual ways. Being a Saturday afternoon there were weddings happening in quite a few.

Messina is also fond of it fountains.

From sea level Messina (probably like most places on Italy) climbs upwards into the hills. There were many old city walls and terraces accessed by old and quite decorative steps.

Up there in popularity with churches and fountains in Messina is Pasticceria (dessert shops). We were told to look out for the angel below because behind it is Ragusa, which is reputed to sell the best of the local speciality – cannoli.

Having had a lovely afternoon taking in the sites, we finished with a local drink before heading back to the ship.

One way to get Mark into a book shop.
